The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating an accidental weapons discharge in the Marion County Sheriff’s Department’s portion of the Marion County Justice Center in Jasper, TN this afternoon. A detective sustained a serious, but non-fatal leg injury as a result of the discharge.

It has been learned that the weapon was accidentally discharged in the hands of another detective within the department. When asked whether the deciding factor on the filing of charges was the outcome of the TBI investigation, District Attorney Mike Taylor stayed, “I will have to make that decision based on a review of all the information concerning the incident which will include the report of the TBI investigation.”

No names are being released at this time because of the ongoing investigation by TBI. Sheriff Bo Burnett stated, “We’ve got the officer at the emergency room in Chattanooga where they are going to run tests to gauge the full extent of the injury.” Burnett also confirmed that this event was not related to an earlier threat on the Justice Center that proved to be unsubstantiated after an evacuation of the center.

Josh Devine from TBI simply affirmed the Sheriff’s comments. “TBI Agents are investigating what appears to be an accidental shooting incident at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in Jasper, in which a deputy was struck. The deputy has been hospitalized in Chattanooga.”

Marion County News will continue to follow the story.
