The Marion County High School Warrior baseball team recently hosted the Seahawks of Silverdale Baptist Academy. The matchup could be seen as a tale of two very different teams. The Seahawks sport a perfect record going into their tenth game while the Warriors are still seeking the consistency for which they were hoping. Ironically, less a disastrous fifth inning, the Warriors were holding their own trailing the Seahawks by just one run going into the inning. Eight Seahawk runs later, the picture looked far more ominous as the Warriors trailed 12-2 going into the bottom of the fifth.
Picking up one run on the bottom of the fifth to stave off a mercy rule victory, thanks, in part, to some aggressive base stealing from outfielder Jacob Saylors, the Warriors took the field in the top of the sixth hoping to find their footing again. Robbie Dykes was on the mound for the Warriors and with some good support from the outfield kept the Seahawks quiet on the scoreboard. The Warriors would fail to capitalize as they weren’t able to strike in the bottom of the inning either. The seventh inning would see the Seahawks piece together some base hits and bring one more man over home plate for a 13-3 lead. The pressure was on the Warriors to generate some offense less they fall victim to a mercy rule defeat. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, that would be exactly what fate the Warriors succumbed to as the Seahawks made some great defensive plays in the infield to mute the Warrior bats and maintain a perfect record for the visiting Seahawks.
The Warriors have a busy spring “break” as they host district foes Sequatchie County on Monday April 2 and then travel to visit Sequatchie on Tuesday. Both of those ages are scheduled for 5:30 pm starts. Thursday, April 5, MCHS will host Lookout Valley for a 1:00 pm game. Monday, April 9 will have the Warriors hosting district rival Grundy County and then Tuesday the 10 the Warriors will go visit the Yellow Jackets of Grundy. Both of those games start at 5:30 pm.
