MARTHA IDA BATES LOVE


Martha Ida Bates Love, 91, died on April 10, 2020, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born on February 1, 1929, in South Pittsburg, to the late John Arthur and Letha Ables Bates.

Martha was a member of Holly Avenue Methodist Church, South Pittsburg, and attended Hixson United Methodist Church. She was a shining example of the greatest generation, was full of feistiness and love. She served at the church by taking communion to the shut-ins. Martha loved being with her family. Martha enjoyed cooking, gardening and planting flowers. Even though Martha lived in Chattanooga, she still held South Pittsburg close to her heart and followed South Pittsburg Pirates football.

Survivors include sons, John “Doug” Love, Sr. and Robert W. “Bobby” Love (Johnnie); daughters, Melony Breakey (Scott); granddaughters, Candace Love and Kate Love; sisters, Nancye Alloway and Mary Jim de Knoblough; several nieces and nephews.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John “J.D.” Love, Sr.; grandson, Robert Wesley Love, Jr.; brothers, John Henry Bates and Herbert “Duper” A. Bates.

The family will be holding a private graveside service at Cumberland View Cemetery in Kimball.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga.
